4 October 1890 North sea. John McFarlane 3rd hand. Deceased was put aboard an abandoned barque name unknown on the morning of the 3rd October and during the night following the barque was lost sight of & nothing has been heard or seen of her. She is believed to have foundered at that time through being run down or owing to damage sustained previously.

Record of Casualty.

3 October 1890 North Sea. Lost our boat & split mainsail. We were bearing down to the barque referred to on page 10 for the purpose of salvage, towing our boat astern of us when she capsized. The incident is also documented in greater detail by the skipper, in the Memoranda by Skipper section of the agreement, found on page 10.
