Records of the Scots Society of St. Andrew

Dates:
1910-2015

Description

Admin History:
The Society was formed in 1910 after a group of six Scottish exiles met in a private room in the Guildhall. At its first meeting, 92 people joined the society. It provided meetings and functions for Scots in Hull, with sons, daughters, wives or husbands of Scots also eligible for membership. At its heyday, in 1953, it had 470 membrs, which resulted in waiting lists for their various events, which included the St. Andrew's Ball, the Hogmanay Party and the Burns Supper. It also held ceilidhs, a dance club and published a magazine, the Hull Scot, annually. After over 100 years of activity, the society decided, due to a declining membership, to formally close, which it did at the AGM in May 2015.
