Description

Admin History:

In 1933 a group of 33 ladies from Hull and the surrounding area got together to share a mutual interest in musical performance, and gave concerts under the name 'Albion Ladies Choir' (see C DSAL/1/1). In addition to their concerts, social functions were organised to help raise funds for their expenses.

The choir soon became well known and a number of people offered support and asked to join. On 1st July 1935 Miss Reba Cohen, conductor of the choir, called a meeting to suggest the formation of a society. This was agreed resulting in the formation of the Albion Ladies Musical Society.

For sixty years the society provided four evening and two afternoon concerts during each annual season which ran from September to May. Other functions also included jumble sales, garden parties and the annual dinner dance.

Concerts were mainly held at the Church Institute on Albion Street but were also held at the YPI on George Street, the Central Methodist Church on Prospect Street, and at the City Hall. The concerts also included performances by the Beverley Borough Brass Band, the Lydian Male Voice Choir, the Young Musicians of Hymers College, the Jill Havler Singers, as well as performances by numerous soloists.

Membership numbers remained fairly consistent during the society's lifetime. However, during its final years the society found it increasingly difficult to recruit younger members. In a meeting on 25th March 1996 the decision was made to disband the society and their final concert was held on 22nd April 1996 at the Mortimer Suite in the City Hall.
