Description
- Admin History:
The Hull and District Squash League was founded in 1950, with six teams competing in just one division. A second division was added in 1954. One of the new teams in this second division was the squash section from the Welfare Club at Blackburnâs, the aircraft manufacturers at Brough. Although they had had a squash court for some years, they would wait until 1954 to join the league. It was at this club, that, some years later, Tony Barker would first become involved in the sport. As squash became more popular, so the league began to expand and by 1979-1980, it had 94 teams in 14 divisions. With the advent of the Humber Bridge, 1981 saw teams from south of the Humber accepted for the first time, although there had been rumours that a Grimsby based team had wanted to participate in the league on its inception back in 1950. Individual women and teams of women had been competing in the main league for many years, but it was not until 1980-1981 that a seven team Ladies Division was established.
1987 saw the establishment of the Humberside Association of Squash Clubs and Centres, an umbrella organisation, which brought together the Hull and District Squash League and the developing junior and over 35s competitions. The junior events had been particulary promoted and sponsored by Humberside County Council. 1987 also saw Tony Barker become the associationâs chairman. 2000 saw another change in the leagueâs organisation, when the Hull and District Squash League became a limited company after legal proceedings brought in 1998, by a player who had been disciplined by the league in 1983. Although the case went in favour of the association, it had demonstrated the difficulties for those running unincorporated organisations. The league continues today, with Blackburnâs, now called Blackburnâs Leisure Squash Club still active league members.
