Description

Admin History:

Hull Cricket Club was established in 1875 at grounds in Argyle Street. In 1897 new land was purchased at 'The Stray' from the Railway Company. Turf and materials were removed from the old ground and the new land was converted into a cricket ground. This area was subsequently expanded and a second ground, 'The Circle', was built. The Circle played host to many first class matches until 1974, and then remained the home of the cricket club until the ground's closure in 2000. The club is currently based at the YPI, Chanterlands Avenue North, Hull, and play at Ferens Recreation Centre and the Police ground.

In 1897 the club was incorporated and became a limited company. The original shareholders were E.T. Sharp, C.H. Johnson, H. Ostler, F. Larard, J.H. Milestone, William Brook, and J. Scarborough. At this time number 158 High Street, Hull, was designated as the companies registered office. The club's Board and Committee meetings were held either at the Imperial Hotel or at the club's grounds. Membership of the club was subscription based and applicants for membership had to be nominated by a member of the committee and voted in by the remaining members of committee. The first chairman of the club after incorporation was Mr John Downs with Mr E.E. Sharp serving as the first Honorary Secretary, and Mr R. Witty acting as the first solicitor. The first directors of the incorporated club were J.B. Bainton, H.J. Reckitt, T.P. Cooke, C.H. Johnson, Joseph Kendall, F. Larard, J.H. Milestone, H. Ostler, and E.T. Sharp.
