Description

Admin History:

The Insurance Institute of Hull was formerly established on 21 November 1913 at a meeting held at the Royal Station Hotel. This was after an informal meeting had been held at Thompson's Cafe on the 9 November. The institute would initially have 116 members and the first president was William Rowley Collinson of Royal Insurance. It's aims were 'the cultivation of knowledge relating to all insurance subjects, the formation of a library and to promote a good understanding amongst members of the profession in Hull'. Almost immediately, it became affiliated to the Chartered Insurance Institute (C.I.I.), which had been granted its royal charter in 1912.

Over the years in Hull Institute grew in strength. As well as talks and lectures on the business of insurance, it organised many social and sporting events as well. This included annual dinners, luncheons and dances as well as theatre, golf, cricket, football and rifle sections and held for example successful quiz nights. As a consequence of the death of members in WW1, the Institute established an Orphanage Committee, which would develop in the Charity Committee and then later into the Benevolent Fund. By 1984, the institute had 338 members, of which 273 were described as 'active'. It's aims would be brought up to date, and were to develop and enhance the career prospects of those working in the fields of insurance and financial services.
