- Admin History:
- The first meeting of the new numismatic society was held on 1st November 1967 at the shop of Patricia Tuxworth in Hull's Hepworth's Arcade. There it was decided to adopt the name of, the Hull and District Numismatic Society. It had the aims of fostering the general study of numismatics and to encourage members to contribute to such studies with particular reference to Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire. It would hold regular meetings, go on visits and engage in coin auctions. The first chairman was Fred Banks, with Pat Tuxworth as the first secretary. There were many significant numismatist within the society including Banks, the Ellwood brothers, Ted Winkler and Arthur Berry. The society would go on to provide several presidents of the Yorkshire Numismatic Society, including Philip Meldrum in 1980, Winkler in 1981 and Geoff Percival in 1992-1993. The society met monthly initially at the Hull Y.P.I, then moving to the Hull Central Library on Albion Street before finding a home at the Friend's Meeting House in Hull. In 2019, with a dwindling membership due to age and very few young people taking up the hobby, the secretary, Geoff Percival, who had been serving in the role since 1983, brought forward the proposal to wind the society up, which was agreed upon. The last meeting was in May 2019.
