Description:
The Port of Hull Society's Old Scholars' Association held their inaugural meeting on Sat 20 Jun 1936 in the Stratten Hall on the Newland estate. This was on the occasion of 'The Grand Re-Union' of scholars. The object of the association was to maintain the traditions of the Homes for the benefit of past, present and future scholars. The desire for an association of this kind had been expressed many times over the years. Eventually the matter was raised by a member of the Board and passed on for consideration by the Welfare Committee whose recommendation that an Association should be established had resulted in the 'Grand Reunion.' It was suggested that the Association's activities would embrace suitable social occasions, sports activities, and general contacts, the underlying principle being the mutual welfare of old and present scholars. The defining of those activities, their scope and action, would be the work of the sectional committees whose formation would be one of the earliest duties of the Executive Committee. It was unanimously decided to adopt the recommendation of the Welfare Committee and proceed with the formation of an Old Scholars' Association. Mr J.H. Ashby was elected Chairman; Mr Sam Walmsley as Hon. Gen. Secretary; Mr E. Watson as Hon. Treasurer, and twelve members were elected to the Executive. The sectional committees created by the Executive Committee were: the social section, the ladies section, the sports section and the benevolent section. During its first year of existence, the Old Scholars' Association attained 216 members
