National Union of Gas Workers and General Labourers of Great Britain and Ireland was formed in 1889 and changed its name to the National Union of Gas and General Workers in 1812. In 1924 it amalgamated with the National Amalgamated Union of Labour and the Municipal Employees Association to become the National Union of General and Municipal Workers, which in 1974 changed its name to the General and Municipal Workers' Union. In 1982 it amalgamated with the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Blacksmiths, Shipbuilders and Structural Workers to become the GMB.

The National Society of Painters had its origins in the Manchester Alliance of Operative House Painters, founded in 1856, which loosely grouped together some local unions based around the city of Manchester. It underwent numerous name changes before beccoming in 1886 the National Amalgamated Society of Operative House Painters and Decorators. It merged with the Amalgamated Society of House Decorators and Painters and several smaller unions in 1904, to form the National Amalgamated Society of Operative House and Ship Painters and Decorators. In 1935, it shortened its name to the National Society of Painters.
