The Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners was formed in London on 4 June 1860 and was one of the largest and most important trade unions of the Victorian era. In 1921 it merged with its rival, the General Union of Carpenters and Joiners, to form the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers. The ASW in turn merged with the Amalgamated Society of Painters and Decorators in 1970 which eventually became the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians in 1971. Robert Applegarth, the first general secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners , was born in Hull in 1834 and became perhaps the most influential union leaders of his time
