Description

Admin History:
The Hessle Cottage Homes, on Hessle High Road, were purpose built by the Sculcoates Board of Guardians and opened in 12 Jan 1898. They were for children who were the subject of broken marriages, poverty, and some orphans. Children were also sent there if their parents fell ill or could not cope. Inspiration for the production of a book about the homes came from Jim Thomson in Adelaide who was resident in the homes as a child. A number of letters appeared in the Hull Daily Mail in 1991 from former residents. The secretary of the Hessle Local History Society, Hilary Tyson, and three others took on the project of writing a book, with the backing of Patrick Howlett, the Hessle Local History Society's Chairman. The book was finally published in 1996 with many of the memories of cottage homes residents recorded in it. They particularly recall life there during the 1920s and 1930s. The book is dedicated to Jim Thomson and his fellow residents. A copy is available in the Local Studies Library (Ref: L.362.73) entitled ' Hessle Cottage Homes.' The Cottage Homes continued until the early 1970s after Hull City Council took them over in the 1930s.
