The Records of the East Riding Commissioners of Sewers

Dates:
1355-1790

Description

Admin History:
An Act of Parliament in 1532 set up the Commissioners of Sewers, including the one for the East Riding. These bodies were responsible management of the land drainage and the flood and sea defences of low-lying land near rivers or the sea. They could bring to their own courts those who had failed to maintain drains as required and they could levy a rate as well. On their abolition in 1930, their functions were transferred to Internal Drainage Boards.
