Description
- Admin History:
- The Asylum Committee of the Borough of Hull was established in 1879-1880 under the provisions of the Hull Extension and Improvement Act of 1882 to take upon themselves the duties, powers and provisions of the 1853 Lunatic Asylums Act. As a result, the Corporation built a new asylum at Willerby. By 1883-1884, as well as running the institution, the committee became the Asylum Visitors Committee as well, taking over that responsibility from a previously established body. During the years 1897-1900 the Asylum (Enquiry) Committee was established which had the brief to 'place the institution on a more safe and secure basis' and to report back to the main Asylum Committee. In 1924-1925, the committee was renamed the Mental Hospital Committee. In 1942-1943 it became the De La Pole Hospital Committee and continued as this until it was terminated in 1949-1950 when the hospital became the responsibility of the Health Service.
