Although the Clerk of the Peace (Special) Committee was established on 1 December 1898 to consider the salary and conditions for a new Clerk of the Peace, the council had been considering the issue since the start of the year. The committee was wound up on the appointment of a new clerk in late December 1898. The correspondence relating to the ongoing salary debate was kept within these records.
