Description

Admin History:

The first fire service provided by the town council began in 1884 and consisted of simple appliances which operated from 4 police stations and was the responsibility of the Watch Committee. The fire service remained the responsibility of the Watch and Licensing Committee until 1940 when the city's fire brigade became part of the National Fire Service until this was abolished in 1948. The Council's Parliamentary and General Purposes Committee established the first city Fire Brigade Committee in July 1947 as a consequence of the Fire Services Act of 1947.

The committee was to have the control and management of the fire brigade and to carry out the provisions of the Fire Services Act and as amended and extended under the Fire Services Acts of 1951 and 1959. In addition over time were added various other responsibilities as legislation was passed:-

Heating Appliances (Fireguards) Act 1952

Licensing Act 1961 (relevant sections)

Consumer Protection Act 1961 (Oil heater regulations) and the Nightdresses (Safety) Regulations 1967

Section 60 of the Public Health Act, 1936

Offices, Shops and Railway Premises Act 1963 (relevant provisions and regulations there under relating to fire precautions)

Sections 50-53 and 55 of the Hull Corporation Act 1967.

In 1973 responsibility for the fire service was passed to the Environmental Services Committee before it was transferred to Humberside County Council in 1974 under the Local Government Reforms of 1972.
