Admin History:

The Gaol Deputation Committee was established in October 1878 to meet with the Commissioners of Prisons. It was to seek for compensation under the Prisons Act of 1877 as the corporation had been forced by the Commissioners to build a prison larger than it felt they required. Having reported back, the committee was wound up in March 1879 after agreement had been reached with the commissioners. Responsibility for any further action required was passed to the Works Committee.
