The Imperial Institute Exhibition Committee was formed in January 1897 after the council received an invitation from Sir Frederick Abel, Secretary and General Director of the Imperial Institute of the United Kingdom, the Colonies and India, to participate in an exhibition at the institute. The committee was to prepare exhibits reflecting the changes in sea fishing that had occurred since the Great Exhibition of 1863. The committee would be made up of 5 council members; the Mayor, the ex-Mayor, the Sheriff and 2 aldermen as well as 2 representatives of the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee. The committee was dissolved in October 1897 after a successful exhibition.
