1847-1848

Description

Admin History:
The Sanitary Committee established in November 1847 was formed in order to carry in to effect the provisions of the Removal of Nuisances, and Prevention of Contagious Diseases Act of 1847 (9 and 10 Victoria ch 96). This was one of the first acts to define what conditions were deemed unsuitable for human inhabitation. It enabled a council to remove nuisances once certified as such by two medical practitioners. Once the provisions were enacted, the committee was wound up in 1848.
