Description

Admin History:
The Common Clerk, later Town Clerk, attended all meetings of the bench or common council, and was clerk to the Magistrates, the Court of Record, The Mayor and Sheriff's Court. The Clerk also had custody of all the charters, records and the common seal of the corporation. It was an appointment important enough to require, if not actual appointment, at least confirmation, by the crown. John Roberts Boyle worked as the corporation's records clerk from 1895 to 1905. Leonard M. Stanewell was first appointed Assistant Records clerk in 1903, later becoming the Records Clerk, before retiring in 1943. He started calendaring many of the ancient records of Hull in 1947 which were published in 1951
