Historical Background: The Common Clerk, later Town Clerk, attended all meetings of the bench or common council, and was clerk to the Magistrates, the Court of Record, The Mayor and Sheriff's Court. During the period covered by these records, the Town Clerks were as follows:- George Codd (1823-1833), Thomas Thompson (1848), Richard Hill Dawe, F. Laverack and H.A. Learoyd (1890s-1915), J.R. Howard Roberts (1930) and A.B. Ward (1983)
