Admin History:
Businessman and philanthropist Thomas Robinson Ferens (1847-1930) gave money to the city of Hull for an art gallery, which was constructed on the site of the church of St. John the Evangelist, in the area that would later be known as Queen Victoria Square. The church, originally built in 1791, was closed in 1917 and subsequently demolished when work began on the gallery in 1924, and which opened in 1927.
