- The Hull Barnsley and West Riding Junction Railway and Dock Company (HB & WRJR & DC) was formed in 1879, as an attempt to break the monopoly of the North Eastern Railway (NER). Work began on the line in 1881 and opened the same year. The line serviced the Alexandra Dock whish also opened in 1881. It was the last substantial completely newly built railway in Britain. 1905 saw the company name shortened to just that of the Hull and Barnsley Railway Company (H&BR). It merged with the NER in 1922, which itself became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in the following year.
