Description

Admin History:
The foundation stone for the Albion Street Chapel was laid in 1841, and the building opened a year later in 1842. The move to erect this new chapel had been led by a number of former members of the Fish Street Congregational Church. The first minister at Albion Street was Christopher Newman Hall (1816-1902) a noted writer of religious works, and one of the leading nonconformist ministers in the country. He supported the abolitionist movement in the United States as well as being a Chartist and a supporter of the temperance movement. The Albion Church opened a Sunday school in 1867.The building was so badly damaged during the air raids of World War Two that the congregation had to meet in the school room. The remaining parts of the church were demolished in 1949, before the church finally closed in 1966.
