Records of the Church of England Sunday School Association, Hull

Dates:
1819-1861

Description

Admin History:
The Church of England Sunday School movement, The National Society, grew out of the work of Anglican philanthropist, Robert Raikes (1736-1811). The first local group in the area, the East Riding District Society was created in 1812. The Church of England Sunday School Association for the Town and Neighbourhood of Kingston upon Hull in Union with the National Society for the Education of the Poor was eventually formed in 1819. Despite the involvement of individuals such as the Rev. T. Dikes [Dykes], it was slower to establish itself compared to non-conformist Sunday schools. By 1861, the Hull Association appears to have been struggling to continue. School Boards were established in 1870 and many Anglican schools closed down or were merged within the local authority system.
