William (Bill) John Davies was born in South Wales in 1904. He attended Aberdare Grammar School and began reading economic history at Cardiff University in 1921. He obtained a BA degree in 1925 and started teaching in Hull elementary schools the same year. He moved to the Hull Boulevard Nautical School in 1928. Throughout his years at the Nautical School, Mr Davies taught English, Geography and History and, during World War II, took on additional subjects such as seamanship and navigation. Thousands of officers in many parts of the world, among them masters and marine superintendents, remember him with affection. In 1937 he obtained his MA degree for a thesis on Hull in the 17th century. In 1960 he was appointed acting deputy headmaster when the school merged with Trinity House School, before he retired a few years later.

Mr Davies was a keen footballer and all-round sportsman. He played for Aberdare FC in the Third Division and in 1924 was inside left in the Universities of Britain side which played the Universities of Italy in Rome. He also captained Hull Old Boys. He was interested in sport, local history and gardening.
