Mr David J. Taylor (1910-1979) was born in Falkirk, Scotland and was educated there and at Emanuel School, London. After leaving school, Taylor went into insurance becoming an underwriter at the age of 23. He spent two years on the Continent in France. There, he built up an important Continental business but when the war came Taylor returned to this country and joined Marconi Instruments Ltd., After several years in works management, he became northern manager in 1945 and chose Hull as his centre, being responsible for the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In 1954, he was appointed as Export Manager at Marconi and returned to London. He acquired an extensive knowledge of electronics and, besides dealing with telecommunications, became interested in radiography and other medical aspects of electronics. He travelled widely in Europe, India, Burma, Pakistan, Malaya and China.

Wanting to spend more time in the UK and return to insurance, Taylor joined the international Minet Group of insurance brokers. In March 1959, he opened up the offices of J H Minet Northern in Hull, covering the whole of the North of England. Taylor chose Hull because he had made many friends here and felt he would be able to bring business into the city.

He was a member of the Institution of Electronics and was the national chairman of the council for a number of years from 1960. He was responsible, with the co-operation of Hull Electronics Engineering Society, for the September 1960 exhibition at Farmery Hall, George Street, Hull where the first purely electronics exhibition was held.

Taylor was a member of the Institute of Export, and sat on the Export Committee of the Scientific Instrument Manufacturers Association in London for 3 years. He was also a member of the Institute of Marketing and Sales Management.

Locally, he was a member of the Publicity Club of Hull; the Scots Society of St. Andrew, Hull; Hull and East Riding RUFC; Sutton Park Golf Club; a vice president of North Ferriby Cricket Club and a founder president of Hull Lions Club. Mr. Taylor was married with four children and lived in North Ferriby. He died in 1979.
