Admin History:
Like its church, the origins of the town of Howden in East Yorkshire, are Saxon. The church would grow substantially during the medieval period, but suffered after the Reformation. Wallingfen was originally an area of marshland that was drained in the 18th century, and on which the village of Newport developed. Roger de Hoveden [Howden] was a 12th century chronicler, who probably came from the town, and who wrote a Gesta Henrici II et Gesta Regis Ricardi, a history of the lives of Kings of England, Henry II and Richard I.
