A Amateur Operatic Society was first mentioned in May 1897 due to the success of the St. James' Choir in 'Trial by Jury' that month. On the 30 July 1897 it was reported that the Grand Theatre was taken for a little before Christmas by the new organisation the Hull Amateur Operatic Society with its first performane H.M.S. Pinafore taking place on 20- 21 December 1897.

Today the Hull Amateur Operatic Society are superceeded by the Hull Musical Theatre Company who meet weekly at Cottingham Civic Hall, perfoming one-off muscial concerts and muscial shows whereever possible. For more information on the Hull Musical Theatre Company see https://www.hullmtc.co.uk/
