Description

Admin History:
The records of the Hull Cowkeepers and Farmers Association begin in 1881 but it would appear that the organisation already existed. According to, 'The Milk Supply of East Yorkshire' by Alan Harris, there were at least 260 cowsheds within Hull in 1886, mainly operating on a small scale. The Society appeared to be quite active in supporting members; offering support in difficulties etc. Social activities including an annual dance and outings which were particularly popular in the 1930s. The 1930s also saw a move towards legislation to provide 'clean milk' with arguments for and against pasteurisation. The majority of small milk producers were against the idea and the Association joined the National Federation of Milk Producers in fighting the proposed legislation.
