The Hull Kingston Swimming Club was formed on 5th August 1886 as an amateur club for men with the intention of teaching and to encourage the 'Art of Swimming'. Its motto was 'Kingston First'. It grew at an astonishing rate with more than 200 members being enrolled in its first year.
In April 1890 the Club became affiliated with the Northern Counties Swimming Association. A branch for Ladies with its own Captain and Committee was established in 1913 and it quickly grew in popularity. In 1931 more than half of the club's members were female.
Jack Hale (1922-2008) the clubs most famous member, won 38 Yorkshire Titles between 1937-1957 and was Commonwealth Champion and Olympic finalist. He is widely credited for inventing the 'dolphin method' of using his feet on the butterfly stroke.
