Hull Private Philharmonic Society

Dates:
1809-1820

Description

Admin History:

The Hull Private Philharmonic Society was established by three gentlemen, Mr John Broadley, Mr Charles Frost and Mr Robert Le Young on 24 April 1809. The proceedings of the Society detail their attempts to form a Society to perform works by a range of composers including [Salomon], Hayden and Mozart.

The Society did meet for a number of weeks but then seems to have struggled as there are no minutes after July 1809 until May 1817 when attempts were made to re-form the Society for practising music under the title of 'The Philharmonic Society' but after a few meetings it appears to have stopped again in June 1817.

The current 'Hull Philharmonic Society' owes its creation to a meeting at the George Hotel in Hull in June 1881 when again a small group of like-minded individuals met to form a society for the practising of orchestral music.
