Ralph Richardson as Squire Robert Carne.

Worried about all the bills that have been collecting and his wife's death, he feels that there is nothing more to live for. He takes his gun and thinks of shooting himself in the woods adjoining his estate. Sarah Burton (Edna Best) on learning that has taken his gun with him, rushes through the house, and reaches him in time to save him.
