Copy letter from Sir John (probably) or Capt. Hotham, Hull, to Newcastle

Reference No:
U DDHO/1/24
Dates:
22 Mar 1643
Description:
Further to U DDHO/1/23: Will never grant Langdale a safe conduct and does not care to treat with him. 'I know him too well.' Cannot write to the Queen to say when he will come in, but inclosed may be shewn to her or burned. Has always said he would do anything to further his Majesty's service in the peace of the kingdom; and that if Parliament became unreasonable he would declare against them; but otherwise he would never desert the party he had set up with. Is grateful to Newcastle for avoiding spoiling the East Riding, but Newcastle must now do as he sees best and no longer prejudice his honour or affairs, and 'we shall do soe for our defence.' As for Sir Hugh Cholmley's 'coming in' (to the Royalist side) every man just satisfy his own conscience. If the King is refused just things 'I shall take noe long time to resolve,' but if Parliament offers a fair settlement and is refused 'I will not forsake them.' Doubts Nevill will speed with my Lord Fairfax, for he cannot offer him to be as well as he is, and fear will not do it. Lord Dunbar's son is in the Mayor's prison for entertaining a priest, and 'I cannot yet release him.'
