Description:
Will only forsake his party for good reason and begs Newcastle to have patience. Sir Hugh Cholmley changed sides with no reason but an old castle which will cost more keeping that it is worth, Sir Hugh's soldiers having deserted him and two ships of his being stopped at Hull, one with 6 pieces of ordnance, the other with good stores. Ridicules 'our valiant Captains of the West,' quitting their strong quarters without a shot fired. They would never have shot at Tadcaster 'when you came first but I shamed them into itt.' Sir William Savill and Rockby told Portington to tell Sir John they were his friends and wished peace. Portington said he would be glad to hear their propositions and do what he could for the public good. Sir Marmaduke (Langdale) has written of his good will 'and what great things I should have.' Has replied 'I [...] need nothing.' Sir William Waller has gained a great victory. Lord Northampton is slain and Col. Hastings prisoner at Stafford. But is prone to believe nothing, the masters on both sides 'feed us with such meate as they thinke fittest for us.' Encloses a particular of Mr. Portington's business.
