Copy letter from Captain Hotham, Lincoln, to Newcastle

Reference No:
U DDHO/1/28
Dates:
18 Apr 1643
Description:
Received the safe conduct too late to use it to visit Newcastle (26 miles away). If he cannot see Newcastle before Newcastle goes north, hopes at their next meeting he can prove his Majesty's service here has progressed well in the meantime 'by your means.' Hopes to gain Lord Willoughby and all those with power and reputation. A letter from gentlemen at Newark about exchanging prisoners, received previous day, was so full of pride and folly that 'these gentlemen here' were troubled at the prospect of joining men of so great folly and little worth. They will never be treated with again 'by any that understands himself.'
