John Lockwood was a solicitor in Beverley who acted as land steward for wealthy landowners such as the earl of Londesborough and the bishops of Peterborough and Durham. For this reason his name frequently appears amongst the other landed family and estate papers held by Hull University Archives. He seems also to have benefitted in the land speculation brought about by enclosure and had considerable properties in Walkington and Bishop Burton. In Walkington he built a hall in 1802, later sold to the Ferguson-Fawsitt family and in Beverley he built Walkington Lodge in Northgate in 1803. He also seems to have owned the Beverley Arms hotel.

In 1803 John Lockwood married Sarah Dickens and she brought to the marriage lands inherited from her father in Beverley Parks and rentals from the Beverley Parks farms are in the collection. They had six children: Harriet (b. 1804), Maria (b. 1807), John William Knollys (b. 1808), Charlotte (b. 1811), Emma (b. 1814) and twins, Mark and Henry (b. 1816). His wife and six children were all alive when John Lockwood died in 1827 and was buried in St Mary's, Beverley. Two copies of his will are in the collection. It indicates that John Lockwood died a wealthy man. He left his wife rentals from his Walkington properties, rents from her Beverley Parks properties, two lump sums of £5000 and £500 and £150 per annum for her life. A year after his death she invested over £9000 in more property in Walkington. His eldest son inherited property in Walkington and went into the church, serving as vicar of Ulrome (1833-1848) and Everingham (1842-1871). The other children shared equally in property as they attained the age of 21 years. Charlotte's account book with the trustees indicates that she had an allowance of £200 per annum as a young woman before dying prematurely in 1838. Her mother predeceased her in 1831.

Description:

This is a small collection largely comprising the estate papers of John Lockwood of Beverley, including four farm account books giving rentals for farms in Beverley Parks, Walkington and Bishop Burton (1817-1820, 1824-1825). Other papers are as follows: Brandesburton (1817); Skidby (1785) comprising his appointment by the bishop of Peterborough as steward of the manor; Walkington (1703-1840) including an 1803 plan of his estate, the will of John Atkinson (1769) and other papers pertaining to the Atkinson and Stafford families, a mortgage issued to Christopher Sykes for £3500, a copy of the contract for the redemption of land tax by the bishop of Durham listing all his property especially in Howden, the marriage settlement of John Lockwood and Sarah Dickens (1803) and John Lockwood's will of 1823 (probate in 1827).

The accounts section of the deposit includes the accounts of the executors (Henry John Shepherd and Willian Robinson Gilby) of John Lockwood's will (1827-1843) and the payments under the terms of the will to one of John Lockwood's daughters, Charlotte. Miscellaneous items in the collection include the appointment of John Lockwood as deputy clerk of the peace for the East Riding in 1784 and the order book of the commissioners for redemption and sale of land tax for the East Riding kept by John Lockwood as clerk.
