Margaret Patricia Macpherson 'Espinasse was born Margaret Wattie on 21 December 1903. Her parents were James MacPherson Wattie and his wife Katherine. She became an English lecturer at the University of Hull and left in either 1969 or 1970. She married Paul 'Espinasse, who was also a lecturer at the university in the Department of Zoology, in 1934. In 1956 her book about Robert Hooke was published. She also worked as a researcher on The Dictionary of Labour Biography and a Margaret 'Espinasse Language Prize is still awarded by the English department. Margaret 'Espinasse died in 1980.
