Description
- Admin History:
Dr Geoffrey Marrison, joined the Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Printed Books in the British Library in 1967, retiring as Keeper in January 1983. He was appointed Honorary Fellow of the Centre for South East Asian Studies at the University of Hull in 1992 and Senior Fellow 2000-2003.
Introduction (provided by Dr Marrison in 1998): Most of the titles were published between 1955-1991. The collection includes Balinese traditional literary texts and folk tales edited by Balinese scholars, some historical texts in Javanese but of Balinese origin and some examples of modern Balinese prose and poetry. In many cases Balinese texts are provided with Indonesian translations and notes.
There are a good number of works on aspects of Balinese culture written by Balinese scholars in the Indonesian language. Much of this collection should be accessible to researchers who have some knowledge of Indonesian. The books are works by indigenous scholars and not the observations of western scholars and for this reason they should be specially useful as a source.
There are also some articles written by Dr Marrison on Balinese culture and literature.
