Admin History:
John Ellis was born in Doncaster in 1930. He joined the Labour Party in 1954 during his period as a laboratory technician at the Meteorological Office in London, 1947-63. He was a member of Easthamstead Rural District Council, 1962-66. He contested the Wokingham constituency for Labour in 1964 and was elected MP for Bristol North West in 1966. He held the seat until 1970. He won Brigg and Scunthorpe for Labour in 1974, but was again defeated in 1979. He acted as Permanent Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Transport, 1968-70, and an Assistant Government Whip, 1974-76. He worked for British Steel in Scunthorpe from 1980 and also sat on Humberside County Council. He has served on the Board of Scunthorpe Hospital. Ellis died in May 2019.
