Out of Joint Theatre Company was founded in 1993 by Max Stafford-Clark and Sonia Friedman. It represents the fourth phase of Stafford-Clark's career which began with his work at The Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh from 1966 to 1972, as Stage Manager, Artistic Director and then Director of the Traverse Workshop Company. He then founded The Joint Stock Theatre group in 1974 together with William Gaskill and others. From 1979 to 1993 he was Artistic Director of The Royal Court Theatre. Sonia Friedman was a producer at the National Theatre, specialising in touring productions and theatre for young people from 1989 to 1993. Following her involvement in Out of Joint, she went on to form Sonia Friedman Productions (SFP) in 2002, a subsidiary of the Ambassador Theatre Group.

Material relating to productions varies from production to production, but might include: scripts and other papers for rehearsals, stage management, lighting, sound, etc, prompter; and also show reports, budgets, box office returns, etc

Also includes corporate papers, accounts, correspondence, administrative papers, material relating to funding, external relations, outreach and education, publicity and marketing; contracts for writers, venues and actors, and material relating to casting.
