Arden's Vaults, wine merchants of Hull and Beverley

Dates:
1787-1908

Description

Admin History:
A number of members of the Arden family seem to have been involved in the business which was built in 1786 and ran until the early twentieth century. Francis Alwyn Arden was a wine and spirit merchant and John Barker Arden, surgeon and apothecary, and mayor of Beverley nine times between 1787 and 1827, seems to have owned the business for a while. His son Charles Arden carried it on and his descendants still live in Beverley. The Arden's built a vault for wine storage with seven foot thick walls; the cellar was one hundred feet in length by twenty feet in width.
