Description:
In this paper, Parkin criticizes the contention of Johannes Warneck, that the Batak have an indigenous belief in a High God. (See: Die Religion der Batak. Leipzig, 1909). He also criticizes Philip O. Lumbon Tobing, who follows the same view in his doctoral thesis: The structure of the Toba Batak belief in the High God, Leiden, 1956. Instead, Parkin demonstrates the influence of the Hindu Siva Trimurti. He discusses Batak religion, including concepts of the Godhead, Indonesian High Gods, the identity of the Batak concept, Batak ideas of creation, including the cosmic tree, evidences of Hindu influence, including the Tamil merchant guild at Labu Tua, near Barus of the eleventh century A.D., and Buddhist and Saiva temples at Padang Lawas, South Tapanuli, of the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries
