- The Superintendents' Association has its origins in a central conference of superintendents established by the Home Office in 1920. The later Association was formed following recommendations made in the report of the Oaksey Committee into policing, published in 1952. The Association served as the sole representative body for superintendents and chief superintendents, contributing evidence to many public reviews and inquiries on the police service during the latter half of the twentieth century. At the time of writing in 2016, the Association continues to perform this function.
