Manuscript, thanks him for his letter and a volume he sent, mentions he is reading 'Our Mutual Friend' and invites 'Seecombe' to call. Note that it is possible that John W. He was, at different times, an assistant master at Marlborough College and an examiner for King's College London as well as for the Universities of Wales, New Zealand and Cambridge. Between 1889 and 1893 he held the position of Clark lecturer in English literature at Trinity College Cambridge. He was a professor of English literature at King's College London when he retired in 1903. He died on 19 May 1914.
