Born in Cheshire on 23 June 1926 Cedric Edward Pickford he attended Stockport Grammar School before reading French at Manchester University which had a high reputation for its work in medieval literature. He completed his BA in 1947 and continued at Manchester for his MA. He then worked in Paris and completed his PHD by conducting a detailed analysis on a 15th text relating to the Arthurian legend. He was appointed Assistant Lecturer in French at the University of Hull in 1950 and rose to become the University's first Professor of Medieval French Literature delivering his inaugral lecture in February 1966. During this time he also served as Head of Department and as Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He wrote and published widely, he was a respected member of the International Arthurian Society but also keen to promote the teaching of modern languages. He died in 1983.
