Rev John Kendrick Archer

John Kendrick Archer was born in Leicestershire on 3 March 1865. He emigrated to New Zealand with his wife and two sons in 1908. He was a Baptist Minister in Napier (1908-1913), Invercargill (1913-1916), Wellington (1916-1919) and Sydenham (1919-1932) and served as President of the Baptist Union of New Zealand (1916-18). He was also an active supporter of the Labour Party serving as a Councillor for Invercargill Borough (1915-1916) Christchurch City Council (1921-1925 and 1931-1935). He was Vice President of the New Zealand Labour Party on three occasions (1922-1925, 1927-1928 and 1929-1931) and was President between 1928-1929. He stood for Parliament of New Zealand on four separate occasions - for Invercargil (1919), Christchurch North (1922 and 1928) and Kaiapoi (1931). He was Mayor of Christchurch from 1925 to 1931 and a member of the New Zealand Legislative Council from 1937 until his death on 25 July 1949
