Tony Lancaster was born in Eccles on 25 June 1938. He graduated from the University of Liverpool with a BA in Economics, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He subsequently worked for the Economic Research Institute in Dublin and the University of Birmingham and had short appointments in the USA and Thailand, before being appointed to the Chair in Econometrics at the University of Hull in 1973. In February 1987 he moved to Providence, Rhode Island, to take up a post at Brown University. He was a respected econometrician throughout his career. He retired from Brown in the 2000s and continued to pursue his own interests.

Tony Lancaster was married twice, first to Carol, with whom he had a daughter Clare; and secondly to Jane, with whom he had two sons, Tom and Rob.
