Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, 1st Baron Lugard was born on 22 January 1858 and died on 11 April 1945. He was a British soldier, an explorer of Africa and a colonial administrator, who was Governor of Hong Kong (1907-1912) and Governor-General of Nigeria (1914-1919).

Sir William Henry Flower was born on 30 November 1831 and died on 1 July 1899. He was an English comparative anatomist and surgeon, becoming a leading authority on mammals, in particular, on the primate brain. He supported Thomas Henry Huxley in an important controversy with Richard Owen about the human brain, and eventually succeeded Owen as Director of the Natural History Museum.
