- Dates:
- 1873-1947
Description
- Admin History:
- The British Gas Light Company (BGLC) was founded in 1824. It would go on to operate 7 stations nationally, one of the first of which was in Hull. The Company established works in 1826 on Bank Side and supplied the Sculcoates and Myton areas with gas lighting. The BGLC, who used coal for its gas, were in competition with the Kingston upon Hull Gas Light Company (KHGL), who used whale oil. In 1858 BGLC had its powers extended, and by 1898, it had a supply agreement with the Corporation of Hull after the Corporation had taken over the KHGL and demolished it's works. 1934 saw the Corporation sell its own gas undertaking to BGLC. Nationalised in 1949, the BGLC was intially placed under the Eastern Gas Board, although the Hull station would later be transferred to the North Eastern Board in 1951.
