Records of James Humphrey of Hull, trawlerman and skipper

Dates:
1952-1993

Description

Admin History:
Records created by James William Humphrey (1930-2015) during the course of his career as a trawlerman and skipper. The period during which Humphrey worked in the fishing industry (1950s-1970s), was one of great change. Initially this saw an increasing industrialisation of the fishing process and the eventual decline of the industry. After this collapse, Humphrey became a skipper on dredgers for several years, working mainly in ports in the south of England. On leaving the shipping business, Humphrey would go on to work with organisations such as the Keep Britain Tidy group, at Everthorpe Borstal (teaching seamanship) and delivering components. Hugh Lafferty (1937-2000) was a colleague of Humphrey's during his days on the trawlers. Although originally from Fleetwood, Lafferty eventually moved to Hull.
